RUG BUYER CONSUMER GUIDE

That’s a Quality Rug.

According to many conventionlist and famous Interior Designers, a home is not complete without the use of a quality area rug in the living area. Found in heavenly colors and patterns will definitely take your breath away. Durable and splendidly designed rugs are best to deocrate your new home or to provide that elegant touch to your existing home.

What’s in a Rug?

A recent survey showed that the business of Oriental Rugs has increased phenomenally. That’s because they play so many roles: home accent, work of art, or collector’s dream. But what should most people be looking for? The most important or the most basic thing to look for in an Oriental Rug is QUALITY. Most people have no idea about how to judge the true quality of Oriental rugs. How do I know if it’s durable, or if it’s properly made, or if it will fall apart on the way home?

One thing to look for is the ease at which you can see the clearly-defined motif of the rug. Obviously the more work that was put into the attention of the stitching will result in a more clean looking picture, pattern, or design. The rug should have an even density throughout, and of course it should be simple for you to see it’s symmetry.

Durable rugs are usually coated in an oxide to protect the fabric and the pattern. They will also be made from dyes that don’t run or fade quickly to preserve its freshness as long as possible.
In addition to its construction, you also have to look at the personality of an area rug. A finely built, but boring and unispiring pattern will no-doubt fall into oblivion as it’s thrown into the heaps of poorly executed works.

Suggested Rug Shopping Places

Quality rugs have been made around the world. Persian rugs were often considered to be the source of the finest quality of the rugs produced in Central Asia, but now, Southern Asian countries have improved dramatically. More important that place of origin would be date of origin. Like paintings, the older it is, the more the area rug will be worth.

Take notice of the colors and trends, which often decide the price of a wool rug. Rugs that do not have an appealing pattern, or color palette are undoubtedly priced less now and will be worth less in the future. Quality rug crafters are akin to artists. The best ones devote their lives to it and create inspiring pieces that appreciate in value over time.

Quality Area Rugs

It is obvious, finely-designed and knotted carpets will have higher value than the coarsely knotted rugs, but here, time to built a particular rug and material used also determines the demand and supply price of the rug to a great extent.

Knot densities are also a major, though not the only, factor in ascertaining the price of a rug. Simply put, the more knots, the more work, the higher material cost, and so the higher the price. 30 knots per square inch are extremely coarse while it would be extremely difficult to find an older rug with more than 290 knots per square inch. There are actually some rugs that are 650 knots per square inch, even 1,000 knots per square inch!

Go out and spend some time looking at rugs, and feeling them if you can. Ask the technical questions. Pretty soon you’ll be able to know the major details of a rug just by feeling it. That’s a skill that can get you better bargaining power to spot fakes, and negotiate a price that is more to your wallet’s liking!
