What is a Rug?
What’s a Rug?
A Rug, from the latin: ‘Rogus’, is a heavy material that most people use to cover part of their floor. We’re still trying to figure out what others are doing with theirs. We say heavy “material”, not “heavy” fabric, because rugs are not all made out of fabric. Sometimes animals are slaughtered, skinned, treated, and spralled out in front of a fireplace. Lovely. Othertimes, animals aren’t hurt at all, like sheep. And when animals aren’t desired or available, there’s always nylon, polyester, acrylic, or some other synthetic yarn.
Some people look at rugs as canvasses on which showcase the creative abilites of the maker. They’re seen as Works of Art, and priced that way too. You’ll see this most often with Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, and Antique rugs especially. Everything from the center pattern to the borders are given the utmost attention. So whether they’re being used out of necessity, or to show off how much money you have – there’s no question that rugs are a popular piece of home décor.

But Why ARE Rugs so Popular?
Rugs are popular because they have so many uses!
For instance, as we’ve already mentioned, many people use rugs as a means to show how much money they have. Like a Mercedes, or a Rolls Royce, some high-priced rugs are Status Symbols. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a million-dollar house without a few nice rugs laying around. And if you don’t see them laying around, try liftig your eyes up because they’re probably on the walls. As tapestry, or encased in an air-tight, glass-covered frame, rugs that are easy on the eyes are usually placed at eye-level. But can you blame them? The ancients spent more time constructing their rugs than builders spend constructing modern-day houses!
Othertimes, rugs are used as collection items. No touching, no stepping on. Whether it’s because the rug-maker was special, or the pattern is meaningful, people DO collect rugs. They’re no different from baseball cards, comic books, or stamps. Some people just have a ‘thing’ for them.
The obvious use of rugs is to provide some warmth in a house that has a lot of cold, solid floors. Too much wood, tile, or marble in a house makes it seem harsh, cold, and unwelcoming. Rugs are many times, the only way to provide that softer, more welcoming touch. It’s very common to see bathroom rugs and kitchen rugs for just that reason: most kitchens and bathrooms have hard surfaces. Of course, you probably won’t want to lay out your 16th century Persian Rug in front of the kitchen sink
Should you Get a Rug?
The decision to get a rug is up to you. You can find them costing as little as $30 or as much as $3,000,000. You can use them to accent a room as you like: You can lighten a room up, add warmth, coordinate the colors, or show off how much money you made last year. One thing is for certain, when 1 item can be used in so many ways, and fit the needs of so many people – that’s sure-fire recipe for a hot item!
