RUG BUYER CONSUMER GUIDE

Contemporary Rugs

Contemporary-style rugs are truly beautiful accents to any space in which they are used. One of the intriguing these rugs offer is the fact that they come in so many differing fibers which gives them endless textures and appearances. The contemporary rug tends to mix fibers in a more dramatic way than the traditional rug forms do and this adds to their appeal to many consumers. This mixing of materials can create textures that are uneven depending on how the various fibers are woven together, or an even feel that may differ from other fibers as the blending of materials can create differing feels than the texture found in rugs of a more traditional nature made perhaps of a single material or a specific combination used for many years past.

Contemporary rugs not only can differ from their traditional counterparts in texture but they also tend to use much more brilliant colorations in their designs than do more traditional styles. Contemporary rugs are known for their experimentations with color and often the blending of colors is less common than that found within other rugs. For example, when bright pink was combined with a lime green as was the trend for a while, many consumers were shocked at the resulting color palette as it came together yet contemporary rugs are know for their unusual combinations of colors that come in a vast array. Color is truly a key element in the contemporary rug which makes them very popular with the younger set, children, and the modernly eclectic individual who is looking to make a definite statement with the rugs they use for accents in sleek, contemporary-styled rooms.

Geometric shapes were the basis for the beginnings of the contemporary rug creation and usually you will find a variety of asymmetrically placed and shaped triangles, squares, and other geometric shapes often involving angles of some sort. Sometimes these shapes will overlap each other to add a dimensionality to the overall design and some involve differing fiber-blends in the same overlapping which also adds a texture to each shape individually. Over time, the angular shapes have been elaborated on and now you can find straight, diagonal lines; circles; and swirls of color found in these very colorful designs.

Contemporary rugs have gone completely into the abstract; and much like abstract art, the patterning can often defy a strict definition when it comes to shape and patterning of the designs in the same. This element has raised the appreciation of contemporary rugs to a new level and now they are not only used as a floor covering as they were when they originally were introduced but now often find themselves used as wall hangings as more of an art accent to a given space. This evolution has only added to the demand for these rugs and their uses are multiplying as their eclectic owners continue to experiment with new ways to display them. Often they are placed on the floor or hung on the wall slightly askew to add to the impact the contemporary rug will bring to the space and to further accent the unusual design of the rug itself.

Contemporary rugs have definitely taken their place among the world of much older, traditional weavings in the world today. The design of contemporary rugs have stretched into a realm that many traditional rugs did not and they have added a lot to the demand for and the design usage of the contemporary look in homes today.
