News from Washington Post:
The intricately woven carpet of red and blue and green, with its asymmetrical pattern of sickle-shaped leaves and floral profusion, was created by an unknown artist in Persia, for someone important, possibly the shah, in the first half of the 1600s to decorate the dais of his throne.
Later, it fell into the hands of a dealer in Paris, where a blustery billionaire industrialist-turned-senator from Montana fancied it. William Clark probably hung it on the wall of his Fifth Avenue mansion in New York in the early 1900s. Upon his death in 1925, his will bequeathed the rug, with his other art, to the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Highly acclaimed — yet rarely seen except in art books — the carpet spent most of the next 88 years in delicate storage.
Now the so-called Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet is valued at $ 5 million to $ 7 million, and it is the showy star of 25 fine rugs and carpets that the Corcoran is offering for auction June 5 with Sotheby’s in New York. “It’s a carpet that has always been revered by carpet people,” said Mary Jo Otsea,……………. continues on Washington Post

PTK Oriental Rug Center in Millburn offers a large selection of beautiful Oriental rugs.
If old oriental rugs could speak, imagine the stories they could tell from past generations. And newer rugs might share information on contemporary life in Pakistan, Turkey or China. But until carpets talk, it might be worth visiting Jafar Tabib, owner of Millburn’s PTK Oriental Rug Center. He’s an experienced interpreter of their stories.
PTK Oriental Rugs opened in Millburn in 1975. Since then PTK has furnished thousands of homes with beautiful hand woven oriental rugs from all over the world. The story of PTK is more than the ebb and flow of a business; it is about a beautiful product that can last for generations, the art and craftsmanship that goes into each rug and the matchmaking process of finding the perfect rug for the client.
Part of PTK’s management and staff’s job is to educate their new clients about oriental rugs. They help them understand that purchasing an oriental rug is more than buying a covering for the floor; instead, it is bu……………. continues on Suburban News

Tehran has organized an exhibition of handmade Persian carpets and rugs, ranging from luxury tableau rugs and carpets to nomad rugs; Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of Persian culture and art, which dates back to ancient Persia. News from Patch.com:
Monarc Antique Rugs, 1413 Wisconsin Ave. NW, is liquidating its entire inventory and will close forever at the end of March.
Signs in the windows and inside the shop announce the closure, which comes after several slow years of sales thanks to a sluggish economy, according to Matthew Farid, an oriental rug consultant for Monarc.
Monarc is liquidating its stock of some 2000 rugs dating from the mid-1800s to more contemporary items in sizes as small as two feet by three feet to “palace-sized,” according to Farid.
When asked if Monarc would consider taking the business online, Farid said, “A lot more goes into purchasing a run than looking at a picture online.”
Persian rug customers want to touch the rug and feel it, to learn about the designs, said Farid.
As Farid spoke, Hassan Beheshti, the store owner, was explaining the design of several rugs to a customer, showing how the date was woven into the carpet and detailing what the weaving meant.
But, the new generation of consumers is shopp……………. continues on Patch.com
