After living in what they had thought was their dream house — six bedrooms, five bathrooms, 3,900 square feet in Ojai complete with orange orchard and pool — Wanda Weller Sakai and Kurtis Sakai found themselves wanting something different. Something less.

“We realized we’d rather downsize to something smaller and more humble and use whatever money we had left over to make something nice for ourselves,” Kurtis said.

“One of the wake-up calls was seeing how much time and money I had to spend on water, property taxes, utilities and landscaping,” he said, adding that the monthly water bill in summer was $ 700. “I started to think that, for the long haul, it didn’t make sense to be in a house that big.”

So they sold the house and bought a 1,700-square-foot, 1971 ranch-house fixer nearby at the foot of Los Padres National Forest, pictured at right, top.

We wrote earlier this month suggesting that wholesalers and manufacturers could take advantage of Pinterest. Now we have an example for you. Surya, a manufacturer of area rugs and home accessories, launched some pretty awesome design boards on Pinterest last week. It didn’t take long before the company had 148 followers on Pinterest, while its “High Point 2012 Spring” board had 270 followers (as of the morning of April 26).

Surya’s new pin boards on Pinterest are designed to interest potential shoppers. According to the company’s press release, “Surya’s Pinterest boards showcase latest trends in home décor to stimulate prospective shoppers’ imagination and drive traffic to Surya dealers.”

Surya targets designers and home décor shoppers by creating and sharing virtual pinboards on Pinterest, the highly visual social network that is all the rage these days.

HAMBURG, April 24 (Reuters) – Business could not get much worse for the Persian carpet dealers who over the past half-century have turned Hamburg’s historic red-brick warehouses into an unlikely centre of the global oriental rug trade.

U.S. sanctions forbidding the import of Iranian-made carpets into the United States, even from third countries, have deprived the rug sellers of one of their largest markets at a time when sales are already depressed. New sanctions on payments to and from Iran have only made life harder.

In addition to its own permanent showroom in the Market Square complex in High Point, Linwood Furniture is one of more than 100 exhibitors this market in the Made in America Pavilion, which has doubled in size to 32,000 square feet from its debut at the fall 2011 market. The pavilion, which now encompasses the entire top floor of the Suites at Market Square building, features American-made furniture, lighting, rugs, wall art and decorative accessories, many from North Carolina.

Jeff Schwall, president of Linwood Furniture, said the small sampling of its product line in the pavilion space should help direct new customers to its main showroom in an adjacent building. He said a growing number of retailers are looking for domestic resources because American-made products are more competitive in price since shipping and labor costs have risen in Asia. He noted even imports from as close as Canada are now more expensive because of increasing freight costs.

Everybody loves hardwood floors, tile floors and even concrete floors. One thing we should all remember about these hard-surface floors is that while beautiful, most do need to be softened. They are a great beginning to any space.

Hard-surface floors have benefits, for sure. They are easy to keep clean and are good for folks with allergies. The downsides are the floors can appear, and be, cold. They are loud. And hard. They are good for pets, bad for babies, cool in the summer and cold in the winter.

The answer to having it all — good-looking hard-surface floors and comfortable, cozy spaces — is area rugs. While you want to show off your floors, rugs finish off the room, make the floors more “homey” and add much-needed warmth.

Kint WilkinsDallas – Area rug supplier Feizy Import &Export has appointed two new regional sales managers to its staff.

Brian Hall is assigned to the Southeast, and Kent Wilkins handles the Western region. Each is responsible for developing business and managing Feizy independent sales representatives in their territories.

Both report to Dale Sweary, vp of sales.

Hall is a 25-year veteran of the home furnishings industry and was most recently in management with Rooms 2 Go. Earlier in his career, he held sales and sales management positions with Shaw Living.

“Brian is a proven professional with strong skills, close connections to the geography and a true passion for the rug business,” said Sweary. “We are excited to have him on our team and know that he will make a significant impact on the marketplace and in building a strong sales team.”
